Evergreen conifer tree with a moderate growth rate. Dense, pyramidal form with rigid, spreading branches. Stiff. May lose nice form and become more open when old. Needles start out soft in the spring and stiffen and harden through the growing season. Wood of some spruces is used to make pulp for paper. The resins are used in medicines and varnishes, and shoots have been used in beer brewing.

Culture: Works well in large, open landscapes where there is full sun. Grows best in moist, acidic, well-drained, sandy soil. Prefers cold climates and needs a lot of watering in its establishment period. The only spruce appropriate for the southwest (other than the mountains) and lower midwestern states.
