Evergreen conifer tree with a slow growth rate. Small, almost shrub-like tree. Tree grows exceedingly slowly. Eventually, the trunk can become very thick. This may be one of the most long-lived species in the world. Some specimens in the White Mountains of Eastern California have been estimated at 5000 years. Needles persist for about 15 years! Bristly, sharp projection at the end of each cone scale give the plant its name.
