
Deciduous tree with a fast growth rate. Narrow, pyramidal form with a long, thin trunk. Clonal, and will form large thickets if space if available. Fall color is especially attractive among the evergreens with which it usually shares slopes. Leaves flutter in the breeze, giving rise to the name quaking. Bark is smooth or pebbled when young.

Culture: Early-successional tree that grows well and quickly under a wide variety of environmental conditions, especially on gravelly or sandy slopes. Does not compete well with other trees and does not tolerate shade. naturally common in relatively pure stands on mountainsides. One of the first trees to grow in sites that have been burned, logged or abandoned but is quickly replaced.
